Entry #3: "My Kind"
Hey everyone, hope your having an amazing day and thanks for tuning in another blog. We all connect to songs. Songs are something we can connect emotionally or by experience along with making us feel a certain way. Songs are diverse and available to everyone. Most people don't know, but songs have meaning and purpose behind them causing that loving connection between a person and lyrics. One song that is the most meaningful and relatable to me is “My Kind” by Alessia Cara. Now most of you all might know Alessia from the song “Here” but “My Kind” is a totally different perspective in which she talks about her childhood and to break it down I we’ll be going through it’s rhetorical situation which includes the writer, adience, context, exigence, and purpose.
"My Kind" By Alessia Cara lyrics:
“Do you recall the days at your old place?
Playing with Troll dolls to scare the kids away
My closet was a time machine, your's the stage
I wish we told those little girls they're gonna be okay
Still picture it all in my mind
Making the campfire out of broken flashlights
Jealous of your high tops, 'cause someone stole mine
Wish somebody would've told me that would be alright
My kind of time's meant to carelessly spend
And my kind of nights are the one's that don't end
My kind of fun doesn't make any sense
And my kind of love you won't ever forget
My kind of time's meant to carelessly spend
And my kind of nights are the one's that don't end
My kind of fun doesn't make any sense
And my kind of love you won't ever forget
Do you remember all the cartoons at midnight?
Like the one about the crass humoured French guy
And what about you, Mister Poetry?
And what about all that we've built in just a couple weeks?
Talkin' 'bout all of our fears through a cracked screen
Picking little fights over falling asleep
I wish you knew I loved you when I knew you loved me
Really wish I knew you sooner than my twenties
My kind of time's meant to carelessly spend
And my kind of nights are the one's that don't end
My kind of fun doesn't make any sense
And my kind of love you won't ever forget
My kind of time's meant to carelessly spend
And my kind of nights are the one's that don't end
My kind of fun doesn't make any sense
And my kind of love you won't ever forget
I'm a product of the who's, when's and how's
Those who let go and those who stuck around
I wish somebody would've told me I'd be here now
'Cause this kind of life is one to sing about (Oh yeah)
My kind of time's meant to carelessly spend
And my kind of nights are the one's that don't end
My kind of fun doesn't make any sense
And my kind of love you won't ever forget
My kind of time's meant to carelessly spend
And my kind of nights are the one's that don't end
My kind of fun doesn't make any sense
And my kind of love you won't ever forget
My kind of love you won't ever forget
Wish somebody would've told me that would be alright”
The writer is Alessia Cara Who's had a history of writing multiple songs with meaning. For example “Here,” which is how she feels left out and uncomfortable going to parties and would rather hang out with her friends as a very antisocial, introverted person. Also “Scars to Your Beautiful” is about people trying to change themselves to fit beauty standards. So Alessia has and will continue to produce and write music that addresses big concerns or include huge life lessons for people.
The audience is specifically her best friend, but it can also include other people who have experienced a similar simple childhood she had.
The context could be her facing life now compared to her living life then when she would find joy in the little things and how they are completely different because she realized how easy it used to be back then and how she wishes she could carry on that simplicity to her life now.
The purpose is to reflect on how simple and easy life was.
The exigence was probably to remind herself that she will be all right and find happiness in the little things in life she has now like she used to do when younger.
When I first heard this song, I liked it because of the melody, and it was not as aggressive as most songs today but after deeply analyzing it, I realized its deeper meaning and overall message. Which is reminiscing on how life used to be simple and carefree, and we took it for granted back then because it doesn’t compare to the challenges we face now that bring us down and don't allow us to be happy. I recommend choosing your favorite song and learning more about it and its meaning to find that deeper connection.
I have never heard this song before, but I have listened to some of her other songs, like Out of Love, which is one of my favorite songs from her. Her songs hit differently from other songs. Sometimes, I cry when I hear Out of Love because it is a song about lovers turning into strangers.
